We’re looking for a WordPress Front End Developer to help shape the future of public digital services. If you’re passionate about intuitive interfaces, accessibility, and building front ends that genuinely serve users — this is your chance to make a real-world impact.

Role Summary

As a WordPress Front End Developer at 6B, you’ll lead the development of responsive, accessible, and performant front-end solutions across WordPress-based platforms for public sector clients.

You’ll collaborate closely with designers, developers, and stakeholders to translate vision into reality — while setting the standard for best practice in UI development, accessibility, and maintainability. Your expertise will guide both the technical direction of projects and the growth of the front-end team.

This is an opportunity to work on projects that deliver essential services to the public, from council websites to national programmes — where usability and reliability matter most.

Responsibilities

Front End Development:

  • Translate wireframes and design mockups into pixel-perfect, responsive front-end code using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Collaborate with back-end developers and designers to implement intuitive, accessible user interfaces
  • Optimise front-end performance for fast-loading, mobile-first experiences
  • Ensure compatibility across browsers and devices
  • Build, extend, and maintain custom WordPress themes and components

Technical Leadership:

  • Lead a team of front-end engineers on complex WordPress and web development projects
  • Ensure high-quality, consistent output across the front-end team
  • Establish and enforce front-end development standards, tools, and frameworks
  • Conduct code reviews and mentor junior team members
  • Champion secure, maintainable, and scalable code

Solutions Activities:

  • Lead system design activities for complex, multi-stakeholder public sector platforms
  • Develop implementation strategies that balance usability, accessibility, and technical feasibility
  • Introduce or adopt new front-end technologies where they improve outcomes
  • Coordinate architectural consistency across multiple projects and clients

Quality Assurance and Testing:

  • Develop and implement automated testing and QA strategies for front-end code
  • Ensure adherence to linting, performance, and code quality standards
  • Debug cross-browser/device issues and ensure consistently high-quality, accessible user experiences
  • Promote a culture of quality, performance, and test coverage across the front-end discipline

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with designers, engineers, and delivery managers throughout project lifecycles
  • Contribute to project planning, providing estimates and technical recommendations
  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Support business development activities (e.g., pre-sales, estimates, tender responses) where needed
  • Stay current on best practices in front-end technologies, WordPress, and accessibility standards

Required Skills

  • Strong experience with WordPress, including theme and template development
  • Proficient in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with strong UI/UX sensibilities
  • Skilled in responsive, mobile-first design and front-end performance optimisation
  • Experience with front-end build tools (Webpack, Gulp) and package managers (npm, Yarn)
  • Comfortable with Git-based workflows (GitHub preferred)
  • Familiar with CSS preprocessors (Sass/Less) and methodologies (BEM, SMACSS)
  • Solid understanding of cross-browser testing and accessibility standards (WCAG)
  • Familiar with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and project tools like JIRA/Confluence
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue)
  • Familiarity with component libraries and design systems
  • Hands-on knowledge of automated testing tools for front-end code
  • Accessibility certification or real-world experience designing for WCAG 2.2
  • Experience working on public sector or government projects
