Creating a Community-First WordPress Platform to Support Local Connection and Wellbeing
Get in touchCommunity Plus is a Kirklees Council initiative that helps residents build stronger social connections and access tailored support to improve their health, wellbeing, and independence. With a team of Community Coordinators working across the district, the programme connects people with local groups, events, and resources that match their individual needs.
To support this vital work, Kirklees Council required a dedicated website for Community Plus — one that would raise awareness of the service, promote local community activity, and make it easier for residents to get involved. 6B was appointed to design and develop a bespoke WordPress platform tailored to the needs of local communities, council staff, and partner organisations.
Previously, Community Plus information was buried within the main Council website, limiting visibility and accessibility. Content was difficult to update, there was no way to promote events or success stories effectively, and residents lacked a clear route to self-referral or support.
Kirklees Council needed:
6B delivered a custom WordPress website for Community Plus, developed using a flexible component-based structure to support ongoing content updates by non-technical users. The design balances accessibility, warmth, and clarity — reflecting the inclusive and empowering nature of the programme.
The site features tailored user journeys for individuals seeking support, professionals making referrals, and community organisations looking to connect. Structured content templates allow staff to easily post events, share success stories, and signpost residents to support services in their local area.
Accessibility was a core priority. The website was developed in full compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards, including keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and responsive design across all devices. Clear language and intuitive layout further support accessibility for users of all ages and digital confidence levels.
The site includes integrated referral forms, map-based navigation for locality teams, and secure third-party integrations for lead management. 6B also provided CMS training and documentation to ensure the Kirklees team could independently manage and grow the site post-launch.
The Community Plus website has significantly increased visibility of the service and made it easier for residents to find support in their communities. The clear content structure and self-referral pathway have improved early engagement, while internal teams are now able to keep the site fresh with events, updates, and real-life stories.
By moving to a dedicated, accessible, and user-friendly WordPress platform, Kirklees Council has created a central digital hub that strengthens the impact of Community Plus — building trust, driving engagement, and helping residents live healthier, more connected lives.
